"Prostitute Arrested", oil on canvas painting by Jack Levitz(American, 20th century), c.1945. 23" x 29".Frame is 28" x 34".This painting was acquired from the niece of Jack Levitz, who described the work this way:"My uncle Jack told me the story of how the painting came about. He said he was in lower Manhattan, looking across the street and saw a prostitute getting arrested, and a crowd gathering, so he immediately starting capturing the scene on canvas. He decided to 'throw in the dog'.".Jack Levitz is one of the great American artists of the 1930/1940/1950 period, when the country was getting out of the Great Depression and World War 2.Painters like Reginald Marsh, John Sloan and Jack Levitz combined the immediacy of the post Impressionists with the Social Realism of the time.Levitz added a wry sense of humor to most of his paintings, which almost always depict the intersection of figures of authority like policemen, judges and courts, with the fringe members of society, the prostitutes, criminals and lawbreakers, in funny juxtapositions. Here, the officer is trying to handcuff the practitioner of the World's oldest profession, to the interested onlookers and a pint-sized critic, in the form of a disgusted child.Over on the left side of the painting, a man appears to be trying to stick his hand in the pocket of a woman's skirt. There is alot of terrific detail in this masterpiece, like the crossed lines of the stockings on the prostitutes legs, done with bold zig zag brushstokes.Enlarge the fifth photo to see the masterful handiwork of Levitz, how he captures that sense of loose hosiery material in the instant he saw it.A wonderful period piece, in great condition.Signed lower right.

Good condition overall, restoration probable but not visible over less than 5% of the painting. There was a small piece of paint that was missing from the area just above the signature, which was restored by David Killen, owner of David Killen Gallery.I trained as a professional painting restorer at Schillay & Rehs gallery under Jim Yost. The area of paint missing was approximately 1/4 inch and the restoration can be removed with nail polish remover in a few minutes if the purchaser wants to use their own restorer to fill in the spot. However, I think I did a great job!You can see where the restoration wss done when you look at the enlarged photo online, but standing a few feet away from the painting it doesn't appear to have any restoration.
