Ink and watercolor scrolls on paper. Approx. 380 cm (150") long by 23 cm (9") in width, on wooden rollers, silk outer coverings, ribbon ties.
Scrolls recording Japanese impression of Russia and her people, culture, military, dress, etc. Each with a paper peable with pencil numbering I, II, III and IV - believed to be part of a larger set. Included are watercolor portraits of a Russian King and Queen, plus a hot air balloon, ships, soldiers in uniform, traveling musicians, violins, a hand-powered fire engine, primitive peoples and boats, houses, what may be a form of ferris wheel, etc. One scroll, uncolored, is wholly comprised of patterns for Russian military clothing. A unique and fascinating series of scrolls. Set in two-part leather case which is splitting.
