Russia, first half of the 19th century CE. Very fine brass and enamel icon in an almost square format. Subject of the icon is the Virgin of the Burning Bush. Central image of Mary and baby Jesus, each with halo, set into an eight-sided star. In the regions around and in the star are various scenes from the Bible. In the corners are the prophecies concerning the mother of God, ; the burning bush of Moses, the seraph who purifies Isaiah's lips, the closed door of the temple of Ezekiel and Jacob's ladder. Inside four of the points of the star are four symbolic creatures - ox, eagle, lion and man. Also shown are the angels of the apocalypse. Based on a 14th century Russian icon, and a very fine example in brass! Size: 3.75" W x 4" H (9.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
