Item Details
Description
Rare Rookwood Standard glaze vase with carved, painted and electroplated fish and seaweed done in 1898 by Kataro Shirayamadani. The most pronounced fish and seaweed are in the copper cladding on the upper third of the vase. In order to do this, Shirayamadani would exactingly carve the details in the clay then color and glaze the rest of the vase, finally electroplating the carved area with copper. In this case, the copper is done in a spiraling fashion around the vase and even on the inside of the throat. Marks include the company logo, which indicates the date, shape number 804 C, remnants of an oval paper exhibition label (most likely Paris in 1900) and Shirayamadani's incised cypher. Height 12 5/8 inches. There is very faint crazing in the glazed area. The copper has a mellow brown patina consistent throughout. The style and execution are quite similar to the cover lot of the Glover Collection Auction in 1991 which was done in Sea Green glaze.
