Donne, John. PSEUDO-MARTYR. WHEREIN… THIS CONCLUSION IS EVICTED. THAT THOSE WHICH ARE OF THE ROMANE RELIGION IN THIS KINGDOME, MAY AND OUGHT TO TAKE THE OATH OF ALLEGEANCE. London: W. Stansby for Walter Burre, 1610. 4to (206 x 157 mm.) [40], 392 pp. Handsome period paneled calf boards, in blind, sympathetically rebacked, renewed endpapers with some edge-toning. Contents appearing carefully and properly restored, washed/pressed, clean overall with the following flaws: Title toned, laid down on tissue, chipped and discreetly remargined; final two leaves with chips removing one or two words and page numbers, both chipped portions replaced in facsimile and the leaves discreetly remargined; 11 other leaves (all at front and back with the exception of 1) with small corner chips which have been discreetly restored (none approaching text); leaf Ddd1 with small corner chip (not approaching text); 5 leaves with some light old ink spatter; final few gatherings with light worming near gutter (not touching text). In all, an attractive and Very Good copy. *************************************** FIRST EDITION OF JOHN DONNE'S FIRST PUBLISHED WORK defending James I's policy regarding Roman Catholics by arguing that they should take the Oath of Allegiance, and demonstrating that those who refused to do so were not genuine martyrs.
