Description:
Cartari presents a detailed description enriched by a complex iconographic apparatus of the Gods worshiped by ancient populations. The author's stated intent is to provide the figurative artists of his time with a complete mythological-iconographic repertoire, an evocative collection of "figurative librettos" in the manner of Paolo Veronese or Giorgio Vasari

For his representations Cartari accesses various traditional sources such as the rich "Genealogie deorum gentilium" by Giovanni Boccaccio, the "De deis gentium varia et multiplex historia" by Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, the curious "Fasti" by Ovid, commented and translated by Cartari himself.
Above all, however, he introduces information derived from a thousand-year heritage of classic, Egyptian, Middle Eastern and Saxon fables and exegesis.

The Paduan antiquarian Lorenzo Pignoria completes the work with the description of Gods from the Egyptian and the New World, of Japan and India
Very important aspect, in the work Cartari combines the figurative aspects with the textual descriptive component which he considered of great importance.

CARTARI, VINCENZO. He was born in Reggio Emilia in 1531 and published at a young age and in the short span of eleven years four works, some of which earned him a reputation:
o I Fasti di Ovidio taken from the vernacular for Vincenzo Cartari regiano, Vinetia, F. Marcolini, 1551;
o Il Flavio intorno ai Fasti Vobr>lgari, Vinegia, Scotto, 1553;
o Le imagini con la spositione de i dei de gliantichi raccolte per Vincenzo Cartari, Venetia, F. Marcolini, 1556;

His name is however mainly linked to the "Imagini de gli dei delli antichi di Vicenzo Cartari reggiano"
