Lot 0115A
The original metal image plate from the front page of The Dallas Morning News, November 23, 1963 reporting on the Kennedy assassination that occurred in Dallas. The headline reads "Kennedy Slain on Dallas Street" with subheadings reading "Johnson Becomes President", "Receives Oath on Aircraft", "Pro-Communist Charged with Act", "Day Began as Auspiciously as Any in Kennedy Career". This metal plate is one of a kind and came directly from the steerman who created it. It printed one of the most significant events in Presidential history from the leading newspaper in the location where the assassination occurred.

Since the Kennedy assassination, newspaper printing technology has advanced to use different methods, but at the time of the Kennedy assassination the process relied on metal printing plates such as these. This is the only existing newspaper printing plates in the world of The Dallas Morning Newspaper dated November 23, 1963 reporting the Kennedy assassination. There may be tens of thousands of even hundreds of thousands of Dallas Morning News pages reporting the Kennedy assassination, but there will always only be one original metal image plate making this item rare. The lot contains three items total including the mat mold from which the plate was cast along with a newspaper from the Dallas Morning News from November 25, 1963.

This image plate belonged to the steerman at the Dallas Morning News. A steerman was the person who poured the molten metal into the impression mold to form the metal plate that was used for printing. Nearly all of the metal plates were melted after serving their purpose of printing the paper, however, the steerman requested to keep this momumental printing plate of the Kennedy assassination to give to his son who was in college at the time. The son of the steerman who poured the metal to create the plate is the consignor of this piece. It has been in the same family since its creation in 1963. Metal image plate: 21" x 13 1/2"; mat mold: 24" x 16 1/2".

This is an unreserved auction with no minimums. This is an online only sale. Items may be viewed upon appointment in New York City.

Condition: The mat mold has age toning on the bottom left side and scattered ink finger prints along the top edge and along the headline. Small chips to the upper left and both lower corners with loss of metal. Darkened areas from aging to the metal plate scattered throughout. Newspaper is delicate.
