American BINDING. - William SHAKESPEARE.
The Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare, in ten volumes. With corrections and illustrations of Dr. Johnson, G. Steevens, and others, revised by Isaac Reed. New York: published by Collins & Hannay, 1821. 10 volumes, 12mo (7 1/8 x 4 1/4in: 181 x 108mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by Thomas Gimbrede of New York, 37 engraved plates by Tanner, Vallance, Tierney & Co. of Philadelphia or Peter Maverick & Asher B. Durand, after W. Hamilton, T. Stothard, R. Westall, J.Northcote and others. (Spotting and browning, to the plates and the adjacent text leaves in particular, occasional signatures sprung or partially sprung, clean tears to pp.209-212 in vol.V).
Contemporary American speckled sheep, the flat spines elaborately decorated in gilt in five compartments, reddish brown labels in the second and fourth compartments, the volume numbers tooled direct in the third, the others tooled with a decorative flourish, the compartments separated by multiple horizontal gilt rules and intermittent rolls (spines with small chips to head and foot, joints weak, the joints to vols. I and X split or splitting, an attractive set nonetheless [see images]).
An attractive and quite early American edition of Shakespeare’s works.
