Ornate Chinese Plaque with Famille Rose Panels, $563,200

ROCKAWAY, N.J. — Cataloged simply as an ‘ornate Chinese plaque’ and estimated at $600-$800, a Qing lacquer and porcelain panel hammered for the jaw-dropping sum of $440,000 at Regency Auction House‘s November 7 sale. The winning bid, which totaled $563,200 with buyer’s premium, was taken in the room against an internet bidder from LiveAuctioneers.

The famille rose panels, each 6.5 by 9in, were the main attraction. They are 18th century (the seals read Qian and Long for the emperor Qianlong (1735-96) and painted in a flamboyant blue-green style, with highlights in yellow, rose-pink and red in the manner of Tang Ying, the famed supervisor of the imperial kilns and a central figure in the development of Chinese porcelain. Two depict landscapes and two show botanical specimens.

The inscriptions to the panels are imperial poems eulogizing the subject matter. The emperor was a prolific poet and essayist with more than 40,000 poems and 1,300 pieces of prose recorded in his collected writings. Although few are considered literary masterpieces, inscribed pieces such as this have an emotional resonance with Chinese buyers and command a premium in the market.

The carved and painted frame is not of the period — it is probably a late Qing confection crafted in the late 19th to the early 20th century — but the additional porcelain elements applied in relief are probably 18th-century too. They included two fish, which were common symbols for wealth and prosperity, and models of playful children, which expressed the desire for a prosperous family. Some of these were damaged, but the panels were in perfect condition.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — An intriguing portrait of a young girl gathering wheat in a field stormed past its modest $700-$900 estimate to hammer at $10,000 at Bonhams Skinner, a most surprising lot from its November 2 European Art Online sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

The Little Gleaner, by Italian artist Umberto Coromaldi (1870-1948), is undated but includes a U.S. Customs stamp on the reverse, additionally marked Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Held in San Francisco in 1915, the exposition was a reintroduction of the post-1906 earthquake- and fire-ravaged city to the world, complete with Beaux Arts architecture that still stands today.

It’s likely Coromaldi sent the piece for inclusion in the Italian area of the exhibit. As a Rome-based painter, he was a regular participant in art exhibitions throughout Italy and Europe, and The Little Gleaner was from his most productive period, just before World War I.

The piece was from the estate of Chase Mishkin (1937-2022), a Los Angeles carpet heiress turned Broadway producer who gained success with the Dame Edna and Memphis productions of the early 2000s, for which she each won Tony Awards.

Second Opium War-Era Letters from Sea Captain to Sons in America, $8,820

WILLISTON, Vt. — A cache of letters sent from a clipper ship captain in Shanghai during the Second Opium War (1856-1860) to his sons in the Charlestown area of Boston resounded with bidders at Merrill’s Auctioneers November 3, skyrocketing beyond its estimate of $400-$600 to hammer at $7,000 and sell for $8,820 with buyer’s premium.

Captain Charles A. Ranlett, Sr. was skipper of the Surprise, an 1850-built clipper ship used in Chinese trade. He found himself in Shanghai as part of his journeys in the 1850s and dispatched a series of letters to his sons Seth and Alonzo at their home in Charlestown. Interestingly, according to the National Archives, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s mother Sara transited on the Surprise as part of the Delano’s family business trading in China and later recounted the “master of the Surprise as ‘a young man of excellent education.’ ‘His name was Ranlett,’ she recalled, ‘and before we got to China, he and I had a grand birthday celebration.’”

Included in the collection of letters was a Chinese document, wrapped in a paper, with a Ranlett family note stating it was the last pass given to transit the Bocca Tigres Forts, which guarded Canton during the Battle of the Bogue in November 1856 during the Second Opium War.

M.C. Escher, ‘Coast of Amalfi (Composition),’ $312,000

‘Coast of Amalfi (Composition),’ a 1934 woodcut by Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher, which hammered for $240,000 and sold for $312,000 with buyer’s premium at Swann Auction Galleries.

NEW YORK – Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) arrived on the Amalfi Coast in 1923 and ultimately created more than 100 works based on its landscape. The seaside village of Atrani and the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena cast a particular charm and inspired some of his most famous later works, most notably the series of Metamorphosis prints.

Escher painted and drew Atrani and its topography from a number of different vantage points during his many visits. Swann Auction Galleries’ November 2 Old Master Through Modern Prints sale included a particularly rare woodcut. Titled Coast of Amalfi (Composition) it measured 27.5 by 29in (70 by 74cm) and dated from 1934.

The auction house described it as “a superb, dark and evenly-printed impression of an exceedingly scarce woodcut, with strong contrasts. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years.”

Estimated at $20,000-$30,000, it hammered for $240,000 and sold for $312,000 with buyer’s premium.

According to Artprice, this is the second-highest price at auction for an Escher print, next to the $600,000 bid at Sotheby’s in April 2022 for one of the edition of 30 of Reptiles from 1943.

Jacek Malczewski, ‘Self Portrait with Black Cap,’ $153,600

Jacek Malczewski’s ‘Self Portrait with Black Cap,’ which hammered for $120,000

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – Trained at the Krakow School of Fine Arts as well as the Paris École des Beaux Arts, Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929) is credited with the rise in popularity of symbolism in late 19th- and early 20th-century Poland. He is particularly well known for his self-portraits, painting dozens of them towards the end of his life.

Self Portrait with Black Cap from 1925, a 2ft 2in by 15in (65 by 36cm) oil on canvas mounted on paperboard, depicts the artist in his trademark black cap in the interior of the Luslawice Mansion, where the artist’s sisters lived, and where he visited often.

Malczewski’s work appears for sale with some regularity in Poland, where six-figure prices are relatively common. However, this picture, which hammered for $120,000 and sold for $153,600 with buyer’s premium on November 2, was sold in Massachusetts.

It was part of an exceptional collection of more than 60 Polish paintings offered at Bonhams Skinner on behalf of the family of the logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski (1901-1983). Like many of the artists in his collection, Tarski had been born in Warsaw to Jewish parents. He and his wife Maria Witkowska had been avid art collectors but left Poland after the Nazi invasion in 1939, moving to California, where Tarski taught mathematics at Berkeley.

SUDBURY, Mass. — On October 22, Tremont Auctions sold the collection of mainly Chinese snuff bottles assembled since the 1960s by Mitchell Bistany. Every one of the 551 lots in the sale carried the estimate of $200-$300 and was offered without reserve, so all were sold. However, some significantly passed expectations.

The top seller was an early 20th-century interior-painted snuff bottle that featured a scene of a hen and her chicks. It was signed for Ding Erzhong (1865-1935), a scholar and possibly an official who was active in the last years of the Qing court and championed the gu yuexuan (enameled glass) technique. It hammered for $11,000 and sold for $13,970 with buyer’s premium.

Among the many porcelain bottles was one with a yellow glaze modeled as the figure of Li Tieh Kuai, one of the Eight Immortals. Dated to the 19th century, with a two-character mark to the base and a coral stopper, it hammered for $9,500 and sold for $12,065 with buyer’s premium.

A bottle decorated in famille rose enamels with a Jaiqing mark (1796-1820) hammered for $9,000 and sold for $11,430 with buyer’s premium, while a double gourd-form enamel bottle with a European subject — copying a type made at the imperial workshops in Beijing during the Qianlong (1735-96) period — hammered for $4,600 and sold for $5,842 with buyer’s premium.

A vessel appealing to both snuff bottle collectors and to enthusiasts of Chinese handling jades was a bottle carved as a snuff bottle bag. Fashioned in a yellow stone and dated to the 18th century, it hammered for $8,500 and sold for $10,795 with buyer’s premium.

WINDSOR, Conn. – The Saturday, October 21 sale at Nadeau’s Auction Gallery features 76 lots of furnishings from a home modeled by New York interior designers Cullman & Kravis. The firm, established by Ellie Cullman and her late partner Hedi Kravis in the early 80s, is known for creating layered interiors that frequently integrate art and antiques.

Most of the lots on offer come with previous purchase invoices showing they were bought from leading galleries at sums well above the estimates they carry at auction. This pair of 18th-century famille rose temple jars with covers were bought at Kentshire Galleries in New York in July 2000 for $20,200. They have an estimate of $3,000-5,000.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A books sale at Everard Auctions on Thursday, October 19 features manuscripts, photos and ephemera focused on British royalty. The collection comes for sale from the estate of William H Rasch. Pictured is an autograph letter penned by Elizabeth, Duchess of York (the future Queen Mother) penned to Peter Pan author Sir James Barrie (1860-1937).

Writing from the London address of 145 Piccadilly (site of the townhouse overlooking Green Park, where the Yorks lived until 1936), she sends Barrie a red crayon drawing of a house done by a young Princess Elizabeth with instructions on how it may be used in a forthcoming charity appeal.

She included the marginal note ‘If you can manage it – will you not let the Press photograph this’ and finishes, “However, I hope that this very poor drawing may be of little use – I write this in great haste after having met Cynthia who told me your dinner is tonight. I am yours sincerely, Elizabeth.”

A glimpse of the future Queen Elizabeth II’s artistic talents, the drawing, together with the letter, is estimated at $3,000-$5,000, with a reserve of $1,800.

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – No 19th-century Grand Tourist would have considered his or her visit to Rome complete without a day spent shopping for micromosaics—images created via the meticulous and tedious placement of hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of tiny pieces of glass. Most would return home with a small box, a paperweight or a plaque, but for those who could afford them, the most prized and most expensive souvenirs boasting micromosaics were tabletops.

The most popular of these, championed by the workshop of Cesare Roccheggiani, contained views of the city set in a circular slab or marmore nero. The example at Roland NY, offered as part of the two-day estates sale on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21, features a central roundel depicting the Vatican from St Peter’s Square and eight surrounding vistas of ancient Roman monuments, including the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Temple of Vespasian, the Temple of Vesta, and the Pantheon. Set on a giltwood base that is probably of the period (circa 1875), the table with micromosaic scenes of Rome is estimated at $7,000-$10,000.

BANGOR, Penn. – Vernors, the oldest surviving brand of ginger ale in the United States, was first served to the public in the years after the Civil War. James Vernor, a second lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Cavalry, returned home to his pharmacist in Detroit, coming up with his formula in 1866. The brand was originally sold as Vernor’s, with the apostrophe dropped from the logo in 1959.

That fact helps date these near-identical 4ft 6in tin advertising signs that are on offer at Hartzell’s Auction Gallery on Saturday, November 4. Appearing as lots 222 and 223 in the sale lineup, both feature the familiar graphic of Woody the gnome, both have ‘excellent paint and color’ according to their lot notes, and both are individually estimated at $2,000-$5,000.

NEW YORK – This unbound galley proof of East of Eden by John Steinbeck (1902-1968) forms part of the family collection of the author’s late sister, Mary Steinbeck Dekker. The 107-lot sale, featuring a vast collection of letters, manuscripts, diaries, presentation copy novels, and personal ephemera will be held by Bonhams on Wednesday, October 25. With most of Steinbeck’s manuscripts and letters held by institutions including Stanford University, the Morgan Library, and the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University, this assemblage provides a rare opportunity to own written material from one of America’s most celebrated authors.

These 243 lightly-thumbed leaves were sent by Viking Press at the direction of Steinbeck to his nephew-in-law David Heyler in 1952. In a letter Steinbeck had written to Hayler some months earlier (a copy of which is included with the lot), he said: “Finished the first draft of the book [East of Eden] 946 pages. Am re-writing now. I think it is pretty good. I asked to have a galley pulled for you thinking you might like to have it. You’ll get it sometime in January.”

Steinbeck was fond of his niece’s husband and began sending him books, manuscripts and memorabilia when the young man became interested in book-collecting. The East of Eden galley proof is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

ASHBURN, Va — Oakridge Auction Gallery, from September 15-18, enjoyed a number of “flyers” — not least the six-figure performance of an album of Republic period landscape paintings. According to the published provenance, it came from a consignor in Chicago whose grandfather had lived in in Shanghai. It had been confiscated during the Cultural Revolution but later returned to the family. Full results for all sessions are at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4).

The 16-leaf album featured a series of calligraphies and landscape paintings by three late Qing dynasty and Republic era artists — Gu Xijin (1865-1930), Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) and Lu Hui (1851-1920). Other artisans have added their seals and inscriptions praising the paintings, while Gu Xijin compliments the keen eye of his friend Fei Nianci (1855-1905), who appears to have commissioned some of the work. A government official from Wujin in Jiangsu province, Nianci held several official posts but later returned to his hometown to focus on poetry, calligraphy, and book collecting. The sale’s big winner, it achieved $110,000 ($140,800 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $5,000-$8,000.

Hammering for $86,000 ($110,080 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $15,000-$25,000 was a pair of Republic period Chinese famille rose porcelain plaques depicting courtly ladies and signed by Wang Dafan (1888-1961). He was a member of the prominent group of Jingdezhen ceramic artists known as the Zhushan Bayou (Eight Friends of Zhushan), the Republic period decorators instrumental in revitalizing the Chinese porcelain industry after the fall of the Qing dynasty.

Huge multi-estimate prices have been paid in recent years for the best Republic period porcelain plaques by the Zhushan Friends. The auction house sald these 2ft 7in by 8in (80 by 20cm) panels were part of a group of items from a consignor in Bethesda, Maryland who had emigrated with her family from Hong Kong to the US in the 1950s.

Dated 1941, one plaque depicts two girls sitting under a willow tree playing chess and carries the inscription ‘Willow shades are good for summer heat, in the boudoir they play chess.’ Its mate, showing a girl playing the zither to her companion, is inscribed ‘In the moonlight, she leisurely plays music, under the leaves she has a bosom friend. Painted by Wang Dafan at Changjiang guesthouse.’
