Chrysler Museum of Art exhibits exceptional collection of prints

NORFOLK, Va. – The Chrysler Museum of Art has welcomed an extraordinary collection of modern prints on loan. Lasting Impressions: Prints from the Collection of David R. and Susan S. Goode will be on view until November 6. This exhibition was announced earlier this year following the Goodes’ $2.5 million donation to the museum to establish the Goode Works on Paper Center and a group of 100 photographs by O. Winston Link, which will be added to the Chrysler collection during the next three years.

A revealing look at the history of nudes in Western art

NEW YORK — The nude in the canon of Western art has a complicated and interesting history. Paleolithic fertility sculptures embodied the essence of physicality and ancient Greek sculptures highlighted the virility and power of the male figure. Moving up to the Renaissance era, nude paintings of women were typically inspired by antiquity but often took on allegorical or symbolic meanings. Cultural traditions and philosophies are just some of the factors affecting how nude figures in art were viewed and depicted.

NEW YORK — Dorothy Lichtenstein, widow of Roy Lichtenstein, and Adam D. Weinberg, Alice Pratt Brown Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, have announced that the Lichtenstein family has promised to donate the late artist’s studio building to the museum. The Whitney, which since moving downtown in 2015 has been a neighbor of the studio, operating four blocks north on Gansevoort Street, will adapt the space to serve as the first permanent home of its widely influential Independent Study Program, which was founded in 1968.

VAN NUYS, Calif. – LAMA‘s first auction presented with Rago/Wright saw very strong results and established new records for works of both art and design. The auction began with remarks by LAMA’s Shannon Loughrey, who ceremoniously turned over the gavel to Richard Wright. Together, Wright and partners David Rago and Suzanne Perrault commanded the block, driving an Art + Design sale total of $2,974,908, with 153% selling by value and 87% by lots offered.
