In-house shipping would be nice to offer customers... especially return customers.

1) Unimaginable Rudeness. I rang the auction house the day I found out about their auction (this was on the Monday, five days before the auction on Saturday) and asked if I could request condition reports. The response was very polite and I was told to send in condition report requests, by all means. These I sent immediately, that same day. I did not receive any acknowledgement of my request, nor the reports themselves so after a few days I called again to see if they had received my email and to ask, very politely, when I might receive the reports. In my 30-odd years of dealing with auction houses I have never met such a rude response. I was shouted at and verbally abused non-stop for several minutes for (a) Calling them as this was taking them away from preparing reports. (It is not my fault if they are understaffed.) (b) Accused of demanding to be put to the front of the queue. (I replied that I was in no way asking this-I just wished to know when the reports might be sent.) (c) I was told that all reports would be sent be the end of Friday before the auction on Saturday. When I said that I had been told that telephone bid requests had to be submitted by Friday and should I, therefore, submit my telephone bids before I received the reports I was again shouted at: "I can't tell you how to bid." 2) Failure to Provide Condition Reports. Inaccurate Photos. In the end I did not receive a single condition report or an answer to any of my questions. With one lot I relied on the photograph on their website. I did buy this item and my friend, who collected the lots I bought, on my behalf, tells me that the textile has many holes that are not evident in the photo. 3) Online Bid "Not Accepted". During the auction I bid online. With one lot I bid $200 and received two electronic messages: (a) "Your bid has been submitted", and (b) "You are in the lead with $200" (or similar, to that effect). There was then a bid of $225 by someone else. I immediately b

The owner, George Jevremovic, is an expert's expert about rugs. He promptly answered my questions. Staffers were cooperative and polite. I consider Material Culture a leading seller of mid-priced rugs.

The one difficulty I had with MATERIAL CULTURE auction management was in trying to contact them promptly after the auction. It took more than two days before my telephone calls were returned. They must have been overwhelmed. Having said this, once we did make contact, everything ran very smoothly and working with them was quite easy. Just the initial difficulty of being unable to reach them generated unnecessary frustration.

They do not offer shipping on paintings and I have to deal with outside vendors. I purchase from them a lot and they are a pleasure to deal with. I think a another way to pay would be nice. The PayPal link is a bit old.
