Auction house did not post photos to disclose obvious damage to frame.
The photographs of the frame did not show the extensive damage on the sides of the frame. It is a very thick frame and the front of it looks wonderful, but when you see the sides, it is obvious that the frame needs extensive restoration before it can be placed on a wall. I thought I was getting an old frame in excellent condition, but I really got an old frame that will require maybe a thousand dollars in restoration before it can go up on a wall. It is obvious that the seller should have provided photos of the damaged areas of the frame, but that was not the case. I would have never paid the amount that I did if I had known how much work needed to go into the frame. In addition, I delayed having my frame shipped to me because I mixed this frame up with another frame I purchased a few days earlier from another auction house in Sarasota. I paid for this frame right after the auction, but I was waiting to hear from the preferred shipper when I received the other frame and got it mixed up with the Helmuth Stone frame. Even though I had paid for the frame, Helmuth Stone did not contact me to let me know that they still had it 2 weeks after the auction. When I wrote a review based on the experience I had with the other Sarasota auction house, one of the Helmuth Stone owners sent me an email in response. He then sent me another when he realized that he still had my frame. Even though he had not contacted me to notify me that I had not had my frame picked up, he stated that I owed him $60 in "storage" fees. I was very disappointed that Helmuth Stone had not contacted me to remind me that my frame was still in their possession even though I paid for it right after the auction, and I was also disappointed that they threatened to charge me "storage" fees without providing notice beforehand. I immediately contacted their preferred shipper to pick up the frame. The shipper was excellent and did a wonderful job of quickly picking up the frame and shipping it!

Hello, thank you for your review. As stated in each lots description we clearly state that even though an item has no condition report does not mean it's in perfect condition. Most of these items are of considerable age and have wear and tear. Because of this, we priced this lot accordingly with a $50 start and $100-200 estimate. We have no control that you willingly bid this item up to $500 and paid more than what we stated it was worth. When it comes to the storage fees, our local shipper reached out to you multiple times with you never responding back to them. Your own confusion caused the delay in your shipping and when we still couldn't get you to answer our shipper we gave you a week and asked if you could arrange shipping in that time we would waive the storage fees. In the future we recommend reading the terms and conditions of the auction houses you do business with and respond back to the emails that are sent to you in reference to arranging shipping so delays are not caused.

Avoid PakMail for shipping
Helmuth Stone publicly indicates one specific PakMail as their preferred shippers. I got a quote and asked for ONE SIMPLE THING: an itemized receipt. I am a long term collector of a very specific genre of art. I’ve had these objects shipped to me over 30 years and I’ve shipped 18th/19th c. carvings myself across the USA. I know pricing for shipping of these kinds of 2-and 3-dimensional objects. PakMail’s quote was absurdly high. When I pressed the issue with the point of contact at PakMail Bradenton I got no response even though an email from them indicated a lower quote was possible. This went on for a week and I finally just paid the shipping quote. Check this out: the guy who avoided at LITERALLY all cost providing me with an itemization (justification) for the quote emailed me and said that even though he’d picked up my item from HSGallery, he was taking it back to the store, refunding my PayPal payment, and I could get alternative shippers for my item. Truly childish, unprofessional behavior and just plain bad business for them and this auction house. Helmuth Stone did provide a list, I chose one, and finally after about another 4 or 5 days my item was shipped. That UPS store’s quote was slightly cheaper but I just went with them so I could get this very fragile item out of this whole ordeal and into my home. The packaging was good but since I’ve packed and shipped fragile, 300-year-old antique art myself I knew the price I paid to UPS was ridiculous for how this object was sent. However, the object now makes a beautiful addition to my world class collection. I’ll bid with this house again (after this review they might not let me) but for shipping I’ll go with the THIRD shipper on the “alternative” list who contacted me too late but with the most reasonable and fair quote for shipping!!!!!

Hello, Thank you for your diatribe both public and privately. We at first were very sorry to hear about your issues about shipping that arose post-auction as you explained it to us until we received the email chain from the local PakMail store that shows the whole story. You leave out some key points and change details that change this whole story. After reading your messages to PakMail and the owner, you were made aware of the pre-auction shipping quote for your item on June 4, prior to the auction (June 6) and from your response were happy with the cost. After the sale, they gave the option of insurance for the package which increased the total by $7. They also requested a home address as the quote they had originally provided via the zip code you gave was for a PO Box which was not deliverable. After the exchange not only did you sign and agree to their terms and conditions and the price quoted but you also made payment to them. From there we see that you started to demand a cheaper price along with an itemized list of (bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and amount of cardboard being used) along with your email being rude and unprofessional. After PakMail explained that the quote they provided was the cheapest option they had you began to call them unethical and childish, at which point PakMail decided that it would be in their best interest to have someone else assist you as you were very unhappy with their level of service (which you had already agreed to in writing and made payment for with no issue). After this we collected your item from them and sent over a list of additional local shippers. You stated to us that you would need a few days to decide and got back to us after 2 days. From the moment you paid our gallery to it being shipped out was 8 days. The fact you state no one responded to you for over a week is false. We hope you enjoy your piece of artwork but believe the slander and unprofessional you bring as a bidder is unwelcomed here at our gallery.

The paintings were actually far nicer than what I thought they would be. This is not the fault of anyone at Helmuth Stone. There simply is no equivalent to viewing the actual portrait. This is why I was even more pleased when I received them.
