Session 3 - Chinese Painting and Calligraphy

The final session of Oakridge Auction Gallery?s annual Autumn Chinese Art and Antiques sale exhibits the ancient and renowned techniques of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy. This collection has been carefully arranged to honor the history and diversity of these crafts. We aim to demonstrate the continuity of this celebrated tradition, with many presented examples taking inspiration from the works of the Tang and Song dynasties, such as lot 454, a calligraphy handscroll by Shen Yinmo. In addition, the core section of this sale features numerous works attributed to prominent artists from the Ming and early Qing dynasties. The wide variety of techniques used in traditional calligraphy are highlighted throughout the sale, especially in lot 481, where a remarkable four calligraphic scripts are used by the same artist, Ma Gongyu. Many of our distinguished consignors are personal friends of famed artists and their circles, and have acquired their paintings and calligraphy directly from them, such as lot 534, a fan painting by Zhang Daqian. The sale concludes with several lots of antique book sets dating to the Qing dynasty covering a range of topics including Confucianism, language learning, and classic literature. A more varied and compelling collection of paintings and calligraphy cannot be found elsewhere on the market.
