Fine Art From The Playboy Archive

This auction features approximately 350 items from the Playboy Archives, including paintings, drawings, and sculpture that appeared in the pages of the magazine from the 1950’s to the 1990’s, (LeRoy Neiman, Alberto Vargas and Richard Hunt), there are a high percentage of Chicago and Mid-west illustrators, because Hefner championed giving the local students from Chicago art schools their start.

Many of these artworks appeared in the magazine to illustrate stories and articles by famous authors such as Vladimir Nabokov, Roald Dahl, Joyce Carol Oates, Norman Mailer, and Ray Bradbury. There are also pieces of abstract art labeled "HMH Collection" (Mid-century Modern works collected by Hefner that did not appear in the magazine). Also a pipe, hat, slippers, smoking jacket, pajamas. The auction also offers a few items from the Playboy Mansion West (HMH memorabilia, college yearbook, Elvis signature, Flash Gordon album) and some clothing, figurines and games, a set of Mid-century stemware).

As with the other sales, the golden years of the magazine (circa 1953-1973) are featured, when the magazine was projecting an image of cosmopolitan sophistication for well-heeled witty and urbane males in leisure pursuits: beautiful women, cars and boats, sports, gambling, travel, food, fashion through the decades, music (especially jazz), celebrity and political portraits. Also selected are Mid-century Modern architectural renderings, main events depicted from the 20th century, visually appealing pieces, Rabbit Head Logo and Playboy Bunny images.
