Maps from a Seller's Private Collection
Chairish Auctions
The ongoing sale of a map dealer’s private collection continues with a number of items never offered before in any venue. All maps in this auction are authentic, original vintage cartographic documents—most of them with period coloring. Over 75% of the maps in this auction are from the second decade of the 1800s to the 1860s. Most of the maps in this sale concentrate on the United States. All these maps are very collectible and are suitable for framing. Selections from the first edition of Colton’s Atlas of the World are present, as are nearly two dozen very scarce United States Coast Survey maps from the early 1850s. Maps from the rare true first edition of Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s 1846 New Universal Atlas will be found, as well as a smattering of maps from other Mitchell and Cowperthwait atlases. The extremely scarce 1816 edition of Mathew Carey’s General Atlas is represented with several very early maps of U. S. states. Most of these maps are the same as in the 1814 edition-- the 1816 atlas is just far scarcer. Maps from the very scarce 1833 edition of Anthony Finley’s General Atlas will be found, as well as maps from several Johnson atlases (Johnson & Browning; Johnson & Ward), Colton atlases, later Mitchell atlases, early McNally, Cram, Gray, Bradford…and a few surprises.
