Day Two is a concentrated fine art and design session led by important paintings, prints, and sculpture, with strong emphasis on blue-chip names, documented provenance, and museum deaccessions. The sale is anchored by William James Glackens, 1934 oil Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec is a key highlight. Printmaking is a major focus of the day. Leading the category is an exceptionally scarce early printing of John James Audubon’s Birds of America Elephant folio size “Ivory-billed Woodpecker” (Plate 66), one of the most sought-after natural history images of the 19th century. It is joined by a Rembrandt van Rijn etching and drypoint, Christ Seated Disputing with the Doctors. European painting is represented by Edouard Léon Cortès’ La Porte St. Denis, Paris from an important Grosse Pointe Farms collection. American historical painting includes John Goodison’s large 1853 canvas, signed and dated “Detroit 1853,” accompanied by a lot essay linking the composition to Hudson River School influence and preserved by Michigan family descent. Museum provenance is a defining feature of the session, with multiple works deaccessioned from the Grand Rapids Art Museum, including John Goodyear’s monumental 1958 painting The Struggle, textiles by Mariska Karacz, and paintings by Frederick Ballard Williams and Jean Weinbaum. A large, cohesive group of paintings by Edgar Louis Yaeger spans figurative, abstract, and landscape works from the 1930s through the 1980s, forming one of the most substantial offerings of the artist’s work to appear at auction. Sculpture and design complete the day, with a Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux bronze Puys, a Roman Bronze Works fountain figure by Caroline Everett Risque, and modern design by Eero Saarinen for Knoll, including Tulip chairs and a marble-top pedestal table.
