Habatat Galleries

Habatat was established in 1971 in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan.
We are the oldest and largest art gallery in the United States devoted exclusively to artists working with glass as their medium. Our 16,000 sq. ft. Michigan gallery (including the Vault) is the home of the original International Glass Invitational, which for over 54 years has introduced and exhibited the greatest artists working creatively with glass.
Our inaugural MasterWorks Auctions commenced as in-person gatherings during the mid-1990s. Over the past five decades, Habatat Galleries has emerged as a cornerstone of the global glass art community. Since 1971, the gallery has played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary glass art, presenting exhibitions featuring luminaries such as Dale Chihuly and Klaus Moje.
Habatat’s global outreach includes organizing the first International Glass Exhibition in China and publishing Ferdinand Hampson’s seminal work documenting the 50-year journey of studio glass in America. These efforts underscore our commitment to fostering a vibrant and interconnected international glass community.
The gallery’s influence extends beyond its physical locations with the initiation of Glass Coast Weekend in Sarasota, Florida, in 2015. By pioneering this annual event, Habatat has introduced the Sarasota region to the beauty and innovation of glass art while contributing to the area’s cultural enrichment and artistic vitality.
Our mission is to serve collectors, both public and private. We take an active role in developing collections and promoting artists we believe should be recognized in our generation and beyond. Habatat works closely with institutions, museums, designers, and art-based organizations, producing exhibitions shown in over 100 public institutions worldwide.
Each year, we publish catalogues for gallery exhibitions and international shows. Collectors interested in consigning artwork for future MasterWorks Auctions are invited to contact Aaron Schey at Habatat directly for confidential consultation and placement opportunities.
We welcome you to the Habatat Family and look forward to sharing our passion for glass art with you.
