DuMouchelles is pleased to present a compelling online-only auction featuring an extensive selection of fine quality 20th C. hand-colored prints after John James Audubon's Birds of America, historical maps, books, and decorative objects. Central to this session is a significant group of Amsterdam Edition offset lithographs after Audubon's original double elephant folio plates. Published circa 1971-72 by the Johnson Reprint Corporation and Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd., these detailed reproductions are printed on watermarked G. Schut & Zonen rag paper and include subjects such as the Blue Crane or Heron, Whooping Crane, Snowy Owl, Ruffed Grouse, Great Horned Owl, and Rough-legged Falcon. Many lots contain multiple prints.

Additional ornithological highlights include rarer birds such as the Sharp-shinned Hawk and Great Northern Diver. The sale also expands into portraiture, featuring 19th-century hand-colored lithographs of prominent Indigenous leaders—Jack-o-Pa, Wa-Kawn, and Red Jacket—originally published by D. Rice, A.N. Hart, and others. Several groupings depict Chippewa and Sioux chiefs, warriors, and women, offering rich cultural and historical context.

Works from McKenney & Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America are also featured, including chromolithographs of Pocahontas, Tshusick, and other significant Native American figures. Complementing the print material is a wide selection of hand-colored 19th-century maps of Michigan, the Great Lakes, and surrounding regions. These include geological surveys, early territorial boundaries, and privately issued county plats.

This diverse offering bridges natural history, Indigenous portraiture, and cartographic exploration—appealing to collectors of Americana, historical prints, and institutional archives alike. Registration for this sale is done separately from our live auctions.
