Description
Be A Cadet Nurse is an American World War II recruiting poster by Jon Whitcomb. The poster was made in 1944 and issued by the U.S. Public Health Service, part of the Federal Security Agency. The program was created by President Roosevelt in 1943 to increase the number of nurses available for home and abroad. To be a Cadet Nurse required a high school education and offered a monthly stipend and free college to those who were accepted. Over 59,000 women enrolled in the program, which ran from 1943 to 1948 and served to promote the nursing occupation in the United States.
Jon Whitcomb (1906 - 1988) was an American illustrator who created many images during WWII for the American government. He served in the Navy and was hired to depict active battle scenes in addition to his military service.
