Item Details
Description
Wall Tapestry, North Coast, Chimu Culture, 1200-1550 CE. Size: 2'8'' x 5'10'' (81 x 178 cm). A spectacular tapestry weaving depicting two ruler/god figures with zoomorphic attendants. Each figure is supported by twin profile jaguar figures, and their crowns have twin jaguar appendages, highlighting the god-king's reliance on these ferocious allies. The twin figures are shown in two color phases, referencing the duality at the basis of all Andean metaphysics. This rare and bold representation of a critical theme was probably used as a religious wall tapestry in a Chimu palace.
