Item Details
Description
Tunic, South Coast, Nazca Culture, 200-600 CE Size: 4'3'' x 5'5'' (130 x 165 cm). Characteristic checkerboard poncho of the Nazca culture. These fine alpaca garments were used, with slight variation, to delineate certain members of society. The bold use of yellow and red references the male and female principles, and the color identification of gender remained the same throughout the Andes for thousands of years. The condition shows areas of loss, but there is no restoration, and the garment remains intact.
