Item Details
Description
Mantle, South Coast, Nazca Culture, 0-400 CE. Size: 6'5'' x 2'7'' (196 x 79 cm). An exceptional example of this royal shawl with a very fine deep red body trimmed with single needle knit figures in near-perfect condition. The Nazca were the only culture to develop and utilize single needle knitting to create three-dimensional figures. As the fringe/hair is dyed with caustic substances, it is often eroded or lost. The row of serial figures displays a variety of colors which may have communicated information about the wearer to the culture. This is a top-quality example.
