Lot 0137 Details

Description
Hamilton, ON. This hollow decoy from the 1st quarter of the 20th century is in excellent gunning condition. It does have a hairline bill crack with paint loss and wear. It has strong Freeborn paint; however, the bottom board is repainted. The breast is stamped R.H.F. for Henry’s son Robert H. Freeborn. Henry, a painter by profession was nicknamed “Dauber”. This hen shows that effective feather rendition. Morris and Freeborn decoys are very similar. Regardless, this decoy – rare, lightly hollowed, fat cheeks, high head with detailed bill carving is a Burlington Bay classic. These features, no doubt propelled this decoy to the winner’s circle in the CDOCA Best Bluebill contest. Text and Freeborn decoy photos are in P. Brisco’s excellent decoy book. 6.5 x 11 x 6"
