EDWARD SCHWARTZ, STREET VENDOR, WITH CIGARETTE, 1948, 7 x 9 ½ inch vintage brown gelatin silver print with "Allen St. near Houston St., NYC" and the date in his hand on verso, and two of the photographer’s stamps. He photographed New York City’s immigrant neighborhoods, and he joined the Photo League in 1938. During WWII he photographed in the South Pacific as a Seabee. After the war he continued his street photography. He had some communist connections. His photographs are in the collections of the NYPL, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Tenement Museum, and the Jewish Museum. Provenance: from the photographer to the consignor.
