"Little Bear's Friend" by Else Holmelund Minarik, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, An I Can Read Book published by Harper & Row, New York, 1960. Early 1960s printing without isbn and without barcode.
Hard boards, illustrated front cover, 6" x 8.3/4"; 64 pages, a small dark spot on the outer edge of the first few pages [see photos]; very good condition.

Else Holmelund Minarik (1920-2012) was a Danish-born American author of more than 40 children's books. She was most commonly associated with her Little Bear series of children's books, which were adapted for television. Minarik was also the author of another well-known book, No Fighting, No Biting!
Maurice Bernard Sendak (1928-2012) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. Sendak was an early member of the National Board of Advisors of the Children's Television Workshop during the development stages of the Sesame Street television series. Internationally, Sendak received the third biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 1970, recognizing his "lasting contribution to children's literature". He received one of two inaugural Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards in 2003, recognizing his career contribution to "children's and young adult literature in the broadest sense." In the U.S., he received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal from the professional children's librarians in 1983, recognizing his "substantial and lasting contributions to children's literature." At the time it was awarded every three years. Only Sendak and the writer Katherine Paterson have won all three of these premier awards.
