Item Details
Description
Hymns for the Camp. [Raleigh, North Carolina]: [Strother & Marcom], [1862]. 32mo. Original boards. Second edition. Sabin 34134; Parrish & Willingham 8795.

Period pencil inscription to front free endpaper: "This Book was found by the undersigned on the Heights of Fredericksburg, May 3d 1863, among the effects of Rebel Soldiers, abandoned in their hasty evacuations of the forts. R.B. Gaid"

A rare Confederate hymn book captured as a trophy of war by a Union soldier who inscribed the circumstances of its acquisition during the aftermath of the Second Battle of Fredericksburg (Second Battle of Marye's Heights).

On the page where the soldier has written his account are rust-red stains, possibly blood, an additional reminder of the costly battle.
