Description
A fascinating group of captured Confederate navy relics, presented together on a souvenir album page, items include:
1. Confederate States of America letterhead. Printed in red and blue with the First National Flag and the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. With period inscription reading: "Rebel note paper 'Captured' from the Rebel Steamer 'Ceres,' off Wilmington N.C. December 7th 1863." Affixed to paper with clipped poem titled "Rest."
2. Affixed to verso: Partly printed receipt completed in manuscript and signed by William O. Putnam. U.S.Str. Montgomery, 12 May 1863. A receipt for Watson's pay of $1,000.
3. Newspaper clipping noting the capture and prize of the steamer "Ceres." With period inscription reading: "The 'Ceres' was taken by the U.S. Steamers 'Montgomery' + 'Aries'".
4. Profile portrait of a sailor or soldier wearing a kepi. Signed "J.W. 1863". Possibly a self-portrait.
