Description
19th-century oil on canvas by Belgian artist P. J. Clays Ships Rafted Along the Scheldt". Painting was gifted by Commodore J. Pierpont Morgan on August 7th 1897 as a prize for regatta victory. The race was from Vineyard Haven to Bar Harbor, and was the main race of the NYYC annual cruise. The race was won by Winthrop Aldrich's yacht Wasp. Wasp was a very successful racing yacht for Aldrich, a former Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. His son and namesake was navigator on Vanderbilts America's Cup defending yacht Enterprise in 1930. This rare painting is an icon of yachting and New York Yacht Club history. This is a painting that Morgan took from his own vast collection. Mounted into a wood and gesso frame.
