(8vo) 22.5x14 cm (9x5½"), each in publisher's blind-stamped cloth lettered in gilt, text volume lettered in gilt on spine.On a hydrographic duty in 1851, Lt. Lee commanded the Dolphin on an oceanographic research voyage throughout the North Atlantic that provided much valuable data. The exploration captured important contributions in physical geography, meteorology, and other sciences. The resulting charts of the North Atlantic Ocean showed a mass representation of rocks and shoals that would be very dangerous to commercial shipping. The voyage also included Atlantic exploration on the Sargasso Seas as well as the North Coast of South America; mouths of the Orinoco River, Brazil, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands. The upper corner of the map details New Jersey and Cape May. Lee eventually would rise to the rank of Rear Admiral after a long career including the Civil War, Wilkes Expedition, and action at Vicksburg and naval blockades.
