Cooper, most with tissue-guards. 22.7x14.5 cm (8¾x5¾"), blind-stamped red cloth with vignette of miner on front cover and spine stamped and lettered in gilt, rebacked with original spine strip laid down.Second or third edition of this work originally published in 1852 as California Illustrated. Letts traveled the Panama route, arriving in San Francisco on July 4, 1849, and from there headed for Sacramento, etc. Kurutz writes: "drawing on his personal experience, Letts produced one of the best accounts of gambling, violence, and life in the mines."
