The Chinese term for magpies is (xique 喜鵲), which literally means 'bird of joy'. The magpie has long been regarded as a bird of good omen in Chinese culture. See a related black-ground cloisonné enamel magpie, Qianlong, illustrated by B. Quette, Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, New Haven and London, 2011, p.277, no.105.

Compare with a related cloisonné enamel model of a magpie on a stand, 18th century, sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 March 2015, lot 245.
