PROVENANCE:
From the Estate of Gerrik Baters, Jr. of Cartersville, GA (1928 - 2020). Veteran, Accountant, Private Collector. After several attempts he found success and a path towards a new career. He also was surrounded and fascinated by the ornate porcelain pieces that she had collected over the years. Learning the history, studying the marks and identifying certain aspects of these items became his passion. His friends called him the professor of Porcelains. While his knowledge has passed with him many of his treasures are left behind.

Chinese Yuan Dynasty Period, blue & white carps lidded box. The porcelain potted in round box, tapered cylindrical shaped body, globular body, the dome with Chinese beast finial bud, raised on round flat foot base rim. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt blue fine color. The main belly decorated with peony flowers blooms interspersed foliage and scrolling tendril. The lower belly festooned with geometric petals and auspicious ornament. Big carp swimming among Lishui water interspersed with water plants and scrolling tendril on the center finial bud. The Carp Similar sounding to the word "Business" in Chinese, the carp symbolizes a wish for benefit or advantage in business, and accepted to represent longevity, wealth, abundance, and perseverance. A characteristic heaped and piled effect, the underglaze grayish-blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground revealed and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. This inadvertently gave texture, energy, and shading to the design. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
