A Russian Revival-Style Emerald and Amethyst-Mounted Silver Covered Tankard Sazikov, St. Petersburg, circa 1868 12-3/4 x 6-7/8 x 6-1/8 inches (32.4 x 17.5 x 15.6 cm) 1720 grams (55.3001 troy ounces) Sazikov was established in Moscow in 1793 by Pavel Feodorovich Sazikov and later inherited by his son, Ignaty Pavlovich during the reign of Nicholas I. Ignaty Pavlovich modernized the firm and the jewelry and silverwork produced by the firm gained international recognition. In 1842, he opened a St. Petersburg branch, where he specialized in the Russian-Revival style so popular at the time. This tankard, based on a fanciful interpretation of old Russian forms, is a work from the firm's apogee. Twenty years later in 1887, Sazikov would be acquired by the Khlebnikov firm and closed.
