Description
A Russian Neoclassical Fruitwood and Mahogany Parquetry Games Table St. Petersburg, circa 1780 29-1/2 x 38-1/2 x 18-7/8 inches (74.9 x 97.8 x 47.9 cm) PROVENANCE: Prince and Princess Alexander Romanoff; Princess Maria Romanoff. Games tables were a ubiquitous feature in Russian salons in the 18th and 19th centuries, and marquetry tables of this type with ribboned friezes and floral motifs were popular and had their roots in English design of the same period which enjoyed a vogue in Russia in the late 18th century. Catherine II ordered the English Palace built at Tsarskoye Selo and ordered the famous "Green Frog" Service from Wedgwood at this time. The offered lot bears comparison to a games table in the collection of the Hermitage (Inv. No. Epr-1784) which came from the Stroganoff Palace (see Guseva & Semyonova, Russian 18th Century Furniture in the Hermitage Collection, State Hermitage Publishers: St. Petersburg, 2015, p. 238) and for other related models see Cheneviere, Russian Furniture the Golden Age: 1780-1840, The Vendome Press: New York, 1988, no. 23, p. 41.
