Description
After Franz Xaver Winterhalter (German, 1805-1875) Portrait of Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna Pencil on paper 9-7/8 x 7-7/8 inches (25.1 x 20.0 cm) (sheet) PROVENANCE: Prince Alexander Nikitich Romanoff; Princess Maria Romanoff. Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna of Russia was born Princess Cecile of Baden in 1839, the youngest daughter of Grand Duke Leopold of Baden and his wife, Princess Sophie of Sweden. Raised in Karlsruhe, she married Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich of Russia, the youngest son of Emperor Nicholas I, in 1857. Around this time, Franx Xavier Winterhalter was commissioned to paint the young bride (57ru-e, Wild 18942, 46; BvR 2015: no. 603). The original work is lost, and is known from a surviving copy and illustrations. This artful pencil sketch after the Winterhalter original is by an unknown artist and is of interest as the Grand Duchess was a great-great-grandmother of Princess Romanoff's husband, Prince Alexander Nikitch. The sketch may have been done by a Romanoff family member. Estate of Princess Maria Romanoff HID03101062020 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
