Description
This rare and impressive ensemble originates from the Kingdom of Bavaria during the reign of King Ludwig I or Ludwig II. The helmet is the definitive Model 1845, featuring a polished steel skull and a high brass comb (cimier) topped with a thick black horsehair crest. The frontal plate prominently displays the crowned "L" monogram, specific to the Bavarian monarchy, flanked by lion-head bosses that secure the brass-scaled chin straps. The matching steel breastplate (cuirass) is a heavy-gauge "proofed" piece, intended for field protection, and retains its interior blackened finish and heavy brass scale-link shoulder straps. The interior of the helmet retains its original multi-tongued leather liner, showing honest age with some drying and typical oxidation to the underlying steel. Overall condition is excellent for its age, showing a deep natural patina, scattered surface scuffs, and minor verdigris on the brass elements. H 14", W 9", D 6.25" (Helmet); H 16", W 15", D 14" (Breastplate). Please see photos.
