Portrait of "Dorothy Parker", the last of the 14 ships known as the "Unlucky Fleet" of five-mast schooners built by George L. Welt in Waldoboro, Maine for Roxbury's W.F. Palmer. Oil on hard board, signed lower right, gilt molded frame.Launched in 1903, the "Dorothy Parker" was a coaster to haul bulk cargo, like bituminous coal, ice and lumber, built to compete with railroads. Commanded by Capt. J. Clement Harding, she had a severe accident in a collision with a United Fruit steamer, tearing her bow away. She sank and was rebuilt at the T-Wharf City of Bangor. In Feb 1912, she endured 43 days straight of gales, was towed to port having lost all her masts and her rudder. In March of 1923, she ran aground and broke up on Handkerchief Shoal, off Chatham's Monomoy Island. She was 2872 gross tons, 294' 6" length, 46' 2" beam,
