Scrapbook Containing Assorted Letters Addressed to William and Elizabeth Dole. A letter album compiled Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dole, wife of Abraham Lincoln's Commissioner of Indian Affairs, containing thirty-two letters from politicians, journalists, military leaders, and other prominent figures. 10 x 12 inches, bound in quarter leather; spine stamped in gilt, covers stamped in blind. The material spans 1842 to 1873, with the bulk dating from the late 1860s and early 1870s, showcasing the Doles' close proximity to national affairs before, during, and after the Civil War. Also included are four calling cards from the Stanton and Sherman families, two war-date passes, and two clipped Civil War–date newspaper articles; in all, representing some of the most influential figures of nineteenth-century American political and military life. Highlights include: Henry Clay ALS. One page, 8 x 10 inches, Washington; February 26, 1842. Clay writes to Colonel William H. Russell of Kentucky regarding the conveyance of land purchased at a tax sale: "Enclosed I commit to you a deed what has been executed to me for the Tax purchase of my land opposite to Alton..." Signed, "H. Clay." Salmon P. Chase ALS. One page, 5 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches, [no place]; dated "Tuesday 16th." A brief personal note to "Dr. Bliss," reading: "Dear Doctor, I was disappointed that you failed to keep your promise to call last week. Will you call this evening? The medicine is exhausted." Signed, "S. P. Chase." With a small oval engraving of Chase affixed to the lower margin. Simon Cameron ALS. One page, 5 x 8 inches, "War Dept," [Washington]; December 10, 1861. Cameron authorizes Dole's passage into Virginia with a Native American delegation: "The Commissioner of Indian Affairs, with a Delegation of Indians & attaches, will pass into Virginia and view our troops on the Virginia side of the Potomac. This to extend for one week." Signed, "Simon Cameron / Secy of War." George B. McClellan ALS. One page, 5 x 7 1/2 inches, [Virginia]; [1861]. Addressed to officers of the Army of the Potomac, introducing Dole and requesting cooperation during his visit with a party of Native Americans: "This will be handed to you by Mr. Dole Comm of Indian Affairs who takes a party of Creeks Seminole Etc. to visit our lines. Please afford him all the facilities in your permit." Signed, "Geo B McClellan / Maj Genl US." War-Date Union Pass. 8 x 5 inches, "Head Quarters, Military Department of Washington"; July 14, 1861. Issued to "Hon Martin F. Conway & friend over the Bridges & within the lines." Signed, "Drake De Kay" as aide-de-camp. War-Date Confederate Pass. 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, "Head Quarters Department of Henrico," Richmond; February 4, 1864. Permitting travel for "James Duvall wife & four children," a British subject who had taken the oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. Signed, "John H. Winder" as Secretary of War. Winfield Scott ALS. Three pages of a bifolium, 4 1/2 x 7 inches, New Orleans; February 28, 1866. Addressed to Brigadier General Robert Campbell Van Vliet, Scott writes just three months before his own death. In part: "I thank you for Capt Morgan's check covering my accounts...I beg to be excused for again troubling you with similar accounts for the present month, but beg that the amt be deposited to my credit in the Leather Manufacturers' Bank, Wall St. as I may be in route, towards the end of March, for the north." Signed, "Winfield Scott." With the clipped right edge of $100 note depicting Scott laid in. Horace Greeley ALS. One page of a bifolium laid-in to scrapbook, 5 x 8 inches, "Office of the Tribune," New York; August 8, 1866. Greeley writes requesting a report on the number of prisoners of war who died in captivity: "A few weeks since...the House voted to ask the Secretary of War for the official return of the number of prisoners captured by either side in our Civil War, with the numbers who died in captivity. I hereby request a copy of that report immediately..." Signed, "Horace Greeley." Schuyler Colfax ALS. One page of a bifolium, 5 x 8 inches, Washington; May 13, 1871. A brief note from Colfax to William Dole, reading, in full: "I have not heard from Mr. Clark for years, but the last I heard of him he was at Sharon, Pa." Signed, "Schuyler Colfax." Also present are calling cards for "The Secretary of War and Mrs. Stanton," "Mr. and Mrs. John Sherman," "The General & Mrs. Sherman," "Mrs. W. T. Sherman," "W. T. Sherman. General," and "Mrs. Frederick W. Seward." Additional correspondents include Edward Bates, Caleb B. Smith, John Sherman, R. J. Oglesby, Henry Ward Beecher, W. J. Ramond, James R. Doolittle, Thomas Ewing Jr., Charles Sumner, F. E. Spinner, Edwin Lamson Stanton, Charles Coffin Harris, and R. W. Thompson. Condition: Wear to covers including scuffs and small chips; joints cracked. Inner pages generally clean and bright, with a few instances of soiling, adhesive remnants, and edgewear. Letters generally very good with smoothed folds and minor wear; most affixed to scrapbook pages with adhesive, a few detached or laid-in. Provenance: Elizabeth Dole and by descent, to our consignor.
