
Toile d'Alsace 'Le Bal', large cotton fabric depicting scenes from a lavish masked ball, based on a design by the Mulhouse wallpaper designer George Zipélius, printed in violet, hand-quilted on cream white linen backing, approx. 1670 x 1200mm., [Mulhouse, c.1845] Footnotes: A large furnishing fabric, probably for the back of a bed, depicting scenes of a magnificent ball including various dancing couples, violinists and musicians, fashionable onlookers seated in balcony boxes festooned with drapes and lit by blazing chandeliers. Trained in Paris as a painter George Zipélius (1808-1890) later moved to Mulhouse where he specialised in wallpaper designs. Lot to be sold without reserve.
