Printed on Imperial Mill Japan vellum at the Literary Collector Press, frontispiece and 102 photogravure plates, engraved by H.A. Hart, signed ""Rhode Island School of Design/ by Stephen O. Metcalf treasr." on the limiting page. Original Ralph Randolph Adams full brown leather binding, the covers each embossed with a rococo cartouche within conforming borders and a border around the edge, with green levant morocco panels on the insides of the covers ruled and embossed with ruffled scroll cartouches suspending floral sprays, the bottom cartouche enclosing "ADAMS N.Y.," the spine with five raised bands and six compartments, four tooled in gold with shell and ruled borders, two ruled and enclosing the title and author, year date "1904" above the tail, green watered silk endpapers, gilt head.H: 14.125 in., W: 11.625 in., D: 2.25 in.Stephen Olney Metcalf (1857-1950) was the son of RISD founders Jesse and Helen Rowe Metcalf and RISD's treasurer from 1884-1950. A graduate of Brown University in 1878, he joined his father two years later in the family textile business Wanskuck Company. The company gradually took over control of several major textile firms, and he became one of Rhode Island's leading textile manufacturers. In 1880 he was elected Treasurer of the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1890 he became a director of the Providence Journal Company, which published "The Providence Journal," "The Evening Bulletin" and "The Providence Sunday Journal." In 1905 he was elected president of the company, serving until 1942. He was also a director of the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company and at his death was senior director of that company as well as the Rhode Island Hospital National Bank. He held directorships in many other banking, insurance, railroad and textile companies and was a major philanthropist.
