
BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk and wool on linen, two alphabet rows and a partial numeral row segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching above a floral band and a landscape scene, featuring an arched bridge, trees and plants, a house, and a green lawn, below with a six-line verse between two wide foliate bands, lower fourth with another landscape featuring trees, a house, and a castle-like structure, signed in bottom row, "Martha Jackson wrought this / in the 11th Year of her / Age 1829", in a trapezoid frame flanked by diamond-form motifs, all encompassed by a floral border. Housed under glass in a later molded frame with label for the Picture Framing & Art Department of Boots Cash Chemists Ltd. / Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd. Dated 1829. 18 1/2" x 22 1/2" sight, 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" OA.
Thread in good visual condition with some fading / fugitive color and toning, scattered losses mostly being small in size, linen in fair condition with toning, discoloration, and stains, some holes and losses including along proper left side edge, frame with moderate to heavy wear and surface scratches, scattered flakes, chips, and losses to molding. Not examined out of frame.
