
Description
World War Two U.S. Navy VT-4 squadron patch. The patch is chain stitched on wool. Measures 5" in diameter. Minor edge wear. VT-4 was commissioned on January 10, 1942 while onboard the USS Ranger in Bermuda. Until July 1944 VT-4 operated in the Atlantic as part of the British Home Fleet. In October 1943 the squadron participated in Operation Leader and struck at shipping targets around Kunna Head, Norway. In July 1944 the squadron transferred from the Atlantic to the Pacific Fleet. In November 1944, VT-4 was temporarily embarked on the USS Bunker Hill for operations in support of the landings on Leyte. Later in the month they transferred to the USS Essex. While operating from that carrier they struck targets on Formosa, Luzon, Hainan and the Ryukyu Island chain as well as in French Indochina (Vietnam). In February they conducted strikes on the Island of Honshu, Japan and a few days later supported the landings on Iwo Jima.On March 1, they conducted strikes on Okinawa. They flew the TBD-1 Devastator early in the war and then switched to the TBF/TBM Avenger.
