Description
Blue Stone Buddha Statue, height 116cm. A temple statue in the Central Plains or Shandong area during the Sui-Tang period, the upper body remains of a large standing Buddha originally used for hall worship. Made of blue stone with dense texture, natural weathering and erosion traces on the surface, no residual painting. Round-carved, the Buddha head has a gentle ushnisha, a round and compassionate face, a clear urna between the eyebrows, the right hand in abhaya mudra (symbolizing dispelling fear from all beings), and simple close-fitting drapery, a typical representative of the "plump, elegant, calm and introspective" style of Sui-Tang Buddhist statues. Sui to early Tang Dynasty (6th–7th centuries). Witnesses the localization transformation of Sui-Tang Buddhist art, a core artifact for studying the evolution of early Chinese Buddhist statues from "Gandhara style" to "Central Plains style". The incomplete upper body further highlights the sense of historical vicissitudes.
