mid 19th century, 176 x 155 cm, East Caucasus

This small-format red-ground sumakh displays a rare design of trees placed in three offset rows. Their diagonal white leaves look like the wings of birds. Small rosettes, stars and tiny animals are distributed across the field ground. More finely woven than usual and in brilliant colours, this beautiful example stands out on account of its fine quality.

Several small rewoven areas. Good overall condition including original knotted warps at both ends. Sides repaired in places.
