This allegorical Renaissance tapestry woven in square dimensions originally belonged to a multi-part series illustrating Old Testament events in the life of Moses. On the right, we see the pharaoh enthroned before a royal blue canopy, surrounded by members of his court. He is looking at a book held out to him by Moses standing on his right. On the pedestal placed before him, Moses is depicted as a boy stepping on the pharaoh’s crown. Further left, Moses is portrayed again to a smaller scale, i.e. at an even younger age, touching glowing embers without getting burnt. The pharaoh is watching these events in astonishment. Emerging from the clouds above, the hand of God appears holding a dagger. This heralds the impending punishment of the intractable pharaoh, who was unwilling to heed Moses’ warnings, and his Egyptian people. The setting of the scene is an idealised European park landscape with a palatial building in the background. Mythological figures drawn in an antique style, striking various poses among shrubs in abundant flower and laden with fruit, constitute the theme of the wide border.
