Description
first half 19th century, 74 x 129 cm, Central Asia, North East Persia / South West Turkestan
HAMBURGISCHES MUSEUM FÜR VÖLKERKUNDE (publ.), Wie Blumen in der Wüste. Die Kultur der turkmenischen Nomadenstämme Zentralasiens. Hamburg 1993, nos. 39, 40
This rare Goklen asmalyk is broadly similar to the two examples exhibited at the Hamburg Volkerkundemuseum in 1993. Their field designs differ very little; their structure, pile material and palette are closely related. We can assume that all three derive from the same lineage and were woven at roughly the same time. However, they diverge in their border designs.
