Description
late 19th century, 240 x 153 cm, South Caucasus, Karabagh
The red field is taken up by two large sunburst medallions, accompanied by small blossoms and a number of decorative motifs along the sides. A third medallion is truncated by the upper horizontal border, so only its lower third is visible. The narrow white main border of prickly-looking star-shaped blossoms and the dark brown wefts are characteristic features of Chelaberds made in Karabagh, which are often Armenian weavings.
Condition
Pile in good condition at its original height, but with three repairs and creases in the lower area on the left. Damage to the right side in places. Brown areas are corroded in places. Both ends backed with a textile band.
