Description
late 19th century, 145 x 94 cm, Central Anatolia, Cihanbeyli
BANDSMA, AREND / BRANDT, ROBIN, Flatweaves of Turkey. London 2003, pl. 79
Completely preserved, this kilim double bag was woven by a Kurdish tribal group who used to live in the Marash region before migrating to the Cihanbeyli area some 100 kilometres north of Konya. This is where Bandsma and Brandt found a number of similar bags. Flat polychrome diamonds combine into a linear design on the brilliant white field ground. By necessity, the ground thus assumes the shape of further diamonds. The specific, prickly-looking, reciprocal hooked outlines of the diamonds make this a distinctive design.
