Description
MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 42". Barrel is marked on top "U.S.". Marked on the top left with "eagle head / P / IS / V". The flat lockplate with beveled edges and rounded tail is marked with a partial "eagle / U.S." ahead of hammer and dated "1820" vertically behind hammer. The conversion leaves a semi-circular portion of the brass pan at the top of the lockplate. This is known as a first model musket with the lower sling swivel fastened to a separate stud ahead of the trigger guard bow. The Model 1816 was the most numerous of the U.S. flintlock muskets made not only by Springfield, but also at Harper's Ferry and by private contractors. The walnut stock is marked on the flat opposite the lockplate with what appears to be a "JM" inspector's mark. Both sides of the butt have a deeply inscribed "CS". Buttplate tang is dated "1820". Forend is held by three iron bands retained by springs, the foresight being mounted on top of the front band. Bayonet stud mounted on top of barrel. Iron ramrod with threaded lower end. Musket is accompanied by a 16 1/2" blade socket bayonet, Model of 1816. The blade has an approximately 9" flute on top and is marked "US / JA". The bridge appears to have been removed in the distant past. Bayonet is well-worn and has turned overall a pleasing brown patina. CONDITION: stock has a very dark appearance with wear and numerous handling marks. There is a small area of partially cleaned reddish-orange paint between the middle and lower bands. The metalwork, originally bright, has turned overall patina with wear and scattered tiny handling marks. Lock functions correctly. Bore has a lightly oxidized appearance throughout. (01-29146/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
