Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba Friction Oracle or Itombwa / Itoom

A carved wooden container of elongated rectangular form, surmounted at one end by a stylized animal head finial, likely representing a crocodile or related creature. The head is rendered with projecting eyes and an open jaw revealing incised teeth, lending the piece a dynamic and expressive character. The box is hollowed with a fitted lid, the surface showing a deep, darkened patina with areas of wear and handling consistent with age and use.
